It claims a viewership of over 90 million homes worldwide, making it the most watched station by young black Americans.

The network was launched in 1980 by Robert Johnson, initially showing re-runs of popular black sitcoms and rap music videos. Since then, the channel has extended to include a variety of news programs and specials.

There’s a lot of controversy over the way African Americans are being represented on the channel. This has led to any high profile protests such as ‘Enough is Enough’ in April 2008.

If you’ve ever attended a media or marketing conference then apart from realising it’s simply an excuse to have a good piss up, you’ll probably have noticed the lack of color and diversity. This site is dedicated to bringing more of a mix to the media conferences.

Technically speaking, ethnic media is a type of media aimed at a particular ethnic group, usually a minority community. Ironically, if you were to target a majority ethnic group, you’d likely be called out for racism or for excluding a minority group.

A few examples of real-life ethnic media are:

Black Enterprise Magazine – a magazine which goes out monthly in the U.S; describing itself as “the premier business news and investment resource for African Americans”. I can imagine the uproar if there was a magazine which described itself as “the premier business news and investment resource for White Americans”

Black Entertainment Television – is a cable network based channel which targets young black-Americans.

Ebony Magazine – Another monthly magazine targeted at the African American market, digest-sized and full of celebrities

Essence Magazine – A magazine for African-American women aged between 18 and 49, released monthly. It Primarily focuses on fashion and beauty.

Hispanic Business Magazine – Business magazine for the hispanic community.

Jet Magazine – A short weekly mag marketed towards… yes, that’s right, the African-American market.

Latina Magazine – A fabulous lifestyle and entertainment distribution aimed at the Latina and hispanic culture

Radio 1Xtra – A Radio 1 segment dedicated to new black music, aimed at the African-British people
